On Friday, January 2, 2009 notes were placed on the Atlantic Hotel, the Solstice restaurant, and the Solstice General Store stating that they were closed and that they hoped to see you in the future. No notice was given to the public so the closings came as a shock to local residents.
Guy Bayshore, general manager of the corporation, simply stated that the current corporation was closed and would be for some time. This group bought and changed the restaurant into a more upscale restaurant two years ago.
Reaction to the closing was mixed with many saying they enjoyed the food at the Solstice Restaurant and many others saying it was too expensive. Hope among all Berlin residents is that the Atlantic Hotel reopens soon.
The Atlantic Hotel is a restored Victorian Hotel circa 1895. There are 16 hotel rooms with either a shower or a clawfooted tub/shower combo. All rooms are unique and decorated with Victorian antiques. Prices ranged from $65 a night for a standard room with a double bed during the winter on weekdays to $250 a night on weekends during August for an apartment style room. Located on Main Street in the heart of historic Berlin it is hard to believe that this hotel can't be made profitable in better economic times.
This is an icon in Berlin and I personally hope an investor or group of investors will come along and reopen the hotel soon.
